Feminism is not an equality movement; at least not fundamentally. Feminism is an interest group movement that has equality as its justification. The two things are not the same. The mission of any movement is evident in the way that it refers to itself (by what titles it is given). The words that we use to describe things have significance whether we choose to recognize it or not. For example, the civil rights movement of the 1960’s was fundamentally an equality movement as its title indicates. It was not called “Blackism” or “Black rights” but civil rights (a phrase which refers to the bare notion of equality itself). It possessed this title despite the fact that its objective in that historical moment was to obtain equal rights specifically for Black Americans.
So what is the inherent danger of using an interest group movement to promote the ideal of equality instead of a movement that is explicitly about equality? Every movement naturally drifts in the direction of its immediate purpose. Therefore if I believe there is an inequality between two groups, but instead of establishing an equality movement I simply establish a movement to favor and push forward one group, I risk working to push them forward in ways that do not actually represent equality. For the fire and the rhetoric which animates my efforts is not born out of a passion for equality, it is born out of a passion for the interests of the group.

I think what really gets me about Stargirl being canceled is that people are always complaining about how they wish DC comics would show off there other characters and yet when DC comics finally does with Stargirl nobody wants to tune in. As much as I love Stargirl it wouldn’t be getting canceled if it had better viewership
